I’ve been a self-hosted n8n user since day one. That’s still my default. I love the flexibility: custom Docker Compose setups, community nodes, and full control over the environment. I barely touched n8n Cloud before. The few times I did, it was just for testing, and even that lasted less than three days.
But today I had to use n8n Cloud for a project, and I ran into a small issue that made me stop for a second and think, “Ohhh… so that’s how it works.”
Here’s what happened.
I submitted a binary file to an n8n webhook and then tried to debug the workflow using Pin Data.
On my self-hosted instance? No problem.
On n8n Cloud? “File not found.”
I checked the obvious things first. The binary.data property name was correct. The workflow structure looked fine. Nothing seemed broken. But the error kept showing up.
The Real Difference Is Under the Hood
The issue wasn’t a typo. It wasn’t a bad node config either. The difference is in how binary data is stored.
In n8n Self-Host
Binary files are typically stored on the server’s local filesystem. That means when you pin execution data and debug again later, the file is still physically sitting there on disk. The pinned execution can still reference it, and everything feels normal.
In n8n Cloud
Cloud works differently. Binary data is stored in temporary object storage, similar in concept to something like S3, and it has a TTL (time to live). So the file only exists for a limited time.
When you use Pin Data in n8n Cloud, the platform does not keep the full binary payload forever. It keeps a reference to the stored file. Later, when you rerun the workflow from pinned data, that reference may point to a file that has already expired and been removed.
That’s why you get “File not found.”
So in short: on self-hosted n8n, the binary file may still be available on disk. On Cloud, the temporary storage can expire, and your pinned binary reference becomes useless.
If you’ve spent most of your time on self-hosted setups, this can feel surprising at first because your usual debugging habit just works there.
Why This Catches People Off Guard
The confusing part is that the workflow itself may look perfectly valid. You can inspect the pinned data, see the binary property, and assume everything should rerun normally. But in Cloud, that binary object is only as good as the temporary storage behind it.
So the execution data looks alive, while the actual file has already disappeared.
Basically, the pointer survives longer than the binary file itself. The temp storage ghosts you. 😅
Simple Workarounds
If you’re moving from self-hosted n8n to Cloud and hit this issue, here are the easiest ways to deal with it.
1. Don’t rely on Pin Data for binary tests
If your test depends on an uploaded file, the safest approach is to resend the real request to the webhook every time you want to debug.
It’s a bit annoying, yes. But it’s also the most reliable method in Cloud because you know the file is freshly uploaded and available during that execution.
2. Save the binary to external storage first
If you need to reuse the same file again and again while building the workflow, add a buffer step at the beginning:
- Upload the incoming binary to Google Drive, S3, or another durable storage service
- Then fetch that file again for the next steps in your flow
This way, your workflow no longer depends on Cloud’s temporary binary storage during debugging.
It adds a little setup overhead, but it makes repeated tests much more predictable.
3. Double-check your content type
One more thing worth checking: make sure the incoming request uses Content-Type: multipart/form-data instead of application/octet-stream.
n8n Cloud tends to be stricter here than many self-hosted setups. If the request formatting is off, binary parsing can behave differently than expected.
So if debugging feels weird, check both:
- how the binary is stored
- how the file is being sent in the first place
The Takeaway
The short version:
Debugging habits that work perfectly on self-hosted n8n do not always translate directly to n8n Cloud.
On self-hosted setups, files often stick around on local disk long enough that pinned binary data keeps working. On Cloud, binary storage is temporary, so pinned references can outlive the actual file.
That doesn’t mean Cloud is broken. It just means the storage model is different, and once you understand that, the behavior makes sense.
So if you see “File not found” while rerunning pinned binary data on n8n Cloud, don’t immediately assume your workflow is wrong. The missing piece might simply be how Cloud handles binary storage behind the scenes.
