Does this work on scanned PDFs?

Only if the scan already contains a text layer. Image-only scans need OCR before text can be extracted reliably.

Why is formatting not preserved?

PDF text is stored by position, not always as clean paragraphs. Extraction focuses on readable text, not full layout recreation.

Can extracted text be automated?

Yes. Recurring extraction from emails, forms, or storage folders can be automated with n8n when the document source is predictable.
